Job Description

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly analytical and clinically meticulous Neuro-Ophthalmologist to join our team. This specialist role bridges the disciplines of ophthalmology and neurology, focusing on complex systemic, neurological, and orbital diseases that affect vision, pupillary reflexes, and eye movements. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional diagnostic acumen to investigate vision loss originating from the nervous system and collaborate seamlessly with multi-disciplinary medical teams.

Key Responsibilities

1. Complex Diagnostic Evaluation

  • Conduct specialized neuro-ophthalmic examinations, including detailed cranial nerve assessments, pupillary evaluations, and ocular motility mapping.

  • Interpret and synthesize advanced diagnostic imaging and tests, such as Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) of the optic nerve head, automated visual fields (Perimetry), Visual Evoked Potentials (VEP), and neuroimaging (MRI/CT scans of the brain and orbits).

  • Diagnose and manage a wide spectrum of disorders, including Optic Neuritis, Papilledema (increased intracranial pressure), idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), ischemic optic neuropathies (NAION/AION), ocular myasthenia gravis, and cranial nerve palsies (3rd, 4th, and 6th nerve).

  • Evaluate and localize visual pathway lesions resulting from strokes, brain tumors, or demyelinating diseases like Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

2. Clinical Management & Interventions

  • Formulate targeted medical management plans, including high-dose corticosteroid therapies, immunomodulatory drugs, and coordination of lumbar punctures when clinically indicated.

  • Provide non-surgical management for diplopia (double vision) using specialized prism glasses or temporary patching solutions.

  • Perform or coordinate therapeutic interventions, such as Botox injections for blepharospasm or hemifacial spasm.

  • Evaluate and optimize patients pre- and post-neurosurgery or radiation therapy for intracranial tumors compressing the optic pathway (e.g., pituitary adenomas).

3. Interdisciplinary Collaboration

  • Act as the key liaison between ophthalmology, neurology, neurosurgery, rheumatology, and neuroradiology departments to ensure holistic patient care.

  • Provide expert consultative opinions on complex inpatient cases exhibiting unexplained vision loss or abnormal eye movements.

Candidate Profile & Qualifications

Requirement Description
Education MBBS followed by a post-graduate degree (MS / MD / DNB) in Ophthalmology or Neurology.
Specialization A formal, dedicated Fellowship in Neuro-Ophthalmology from a premier, recognized eye institute or medical college.
Experience 1 to 5+ years of post-fellowship clinical experience dealing with complex neuro-visual disorders.
Clinical Competency High proficiency in reading neuroimaging, localized visual field analysis, and treating optic nerve pathologies.
Key Soft Skills Deep analytical thinking, exceptional patience for lengthy diagnostic workups, and strong collaborative communication skills.
